Palm Springs has been an LGBTQ+ getaway for decades, dating back to the glamorous days of Hollywood in the early 1930s. Actors working in Hollywood would escape to Palm Springs, just a two-hour drive away, to let loose and mingle with other closeted members of the entertainment industry. Today, Palm Springs may have a reputation as a destination primarily for middle-aged or retired visitors, but don’t be fooled, Palm Springs remains a playground for all generations. Especially during major events like gay pride, The White Party and the Coachella Music Festival, which draws an especially young demographic.

With year-round warm weather and plenty of events and cool activities, there’s no better time than now to take a page out of the old Hollywood stars' book and head into the desert for a gaycation among the palms.

General Tips

One of the best things to do in Palm Springs is, quite simply, nothing. After all, Palm Springs is a resort town, so take advantage of it: head to your hotel or resort’s pool and spend your day lounging, sipping cocktails, and enjoying your—no doubt well-earned—holiday time. You’re also following in the footsteps of distinguished company, as Palm Springs is famous as the second home to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, past and present. Barbra Streisand, for one, along with many other famous actors, actresses, and gay icons, calls Palm Springs home.

Palm Springs is, of course, located in a desert, so the months of July and August are extremely hot and best to avoid. The more prudent time to visit is October to March when the heat is more bearable, with daytime temperatures around 25–30°C (75–85°F), and it can get surprisingly cool in the evening, often down to 10–15°C (50–60°F). While not ideal for swimming, winter can still make for a pleasant getaway, especially if you’re coming from a cold destination and want to escape the snow. Note there's a big difference in the population when there is a big gay event on and when there isn't, so check the calendar if you're looking for a relaxing getaway and don't fancy being swept up in a horde of topless partygoers – which sounds like heaven to us, but isn't for everyone.

It should go without saying that Palm Springs is gay-friendly—how could it be anything else? You’ll be welcomed anywhere in the town, but the Arenas District is the true gayborhood for those looking for a good night out!

Transportation & Airport Transfer

Most people visiting Palm Springs arrive by car from LA or nearby urban centers. The drive from LA is just two hours and makes for an easy add-on to any visit to Los Angeles. However, Palm Springs does actually have its own – admittedly small – airport just a 10 minute drive from the downtown.

Palm Springs is a small town with a population of just 46,000. If you stay in the central and downtown part of the city, you can explore the town without the need to drive. For travel longer distances, Uber and Lyft are surprisingly cheap. Again though, check there isn't a big event on in town, when prices go up.

Gay Hotels & Resorts in Palm Springs

Palm Springs has more all gay resorts and hotels than any city in the world. Before it was safe to be openly gay, these resorts were a major draw for LGBTQ+ visitors, offering a space to vacation and mingle together in privacy.
