Miami might be trendy, hip, and fashionable—but Fort Lauderdale, just 30 minutes north, is its more laid-back, hippy, gay cousin.

Fort Lauderdale has never tried to match the fast-paced glitz of Miami, nor should it. The city more than holds its own with 23 miles of turquoise-watered beaches, at least 50 LGBTQ+-friendly establishments (not to mention the iconic Wilton Manors), and the highest concentration of LGBTQ+ couples in the U.S. So, if you’re looking for a warm-weather destination with beaches and gay activities galore that won't bleed your bank account dry, then Fort Lauderdale might just be your ticket to the perfect Florida gaycation.

General Tips

It should come as no surprise that Fort Lauderdale boasts a lively gay neighborhood, given its large population of LGBTQ+ residents. Wilton Manors, an area just northwest of downtown, is where you’ll find most of the LGBTQ+-specific venues in town.

Fort Lauderdale has also come out in front purposefully welcoming trans travelers, setting itself apart from most LGBTQ+-friendly destinations. Local authorities and the tourism bureau have worked tirelessly over the past few years to understand the specific needs of the trans community and ensure that the city is equipped to provide for it.

Fort Lauderdale long had a reputation as a destination primarily for the older generation of LGBTQ+ people. While there is still a thriving community of middle-aged and retired residents, the demographic of both residents and visitors has shifted noticeably younger. These days, plenty of 20- and 30-somethings call Fort Lauderdale home or visit each year. Many attribute the growth of Fort Lauderdale’s gay community to the decline in popularity of Miami Beach for LGBTQ+ residents. As Miami has evolved over the decades, many have moved north to the less pretentious and more affordable neighborhoods of Fort Lauderdale, particularly Wilton Manors, where you’ll find the majority of the popular nightlife venues.

The club scene in Fort Lauderdale is distinct from the upscale, sometimes pretentious vibe of Miami Beach. Fort Lauderdale is casual, as are its dance venues. The Manor is a must-visit spot, especially if you choose only one club. However, you can find dancing at other spots as well, including Hunters and even Scandals—if country music and hot cowboys are your thing.

Transportation & Airport Transfer

Fort Lauderdale has its own international airport, just a 15-20-minute drive to most parts of the city. Many hotels also offer free shuttle service from the airport, so check before you arrive. If you fly into Miami, you can take the Tri-Rail from the airport to Fort Lauderdale. An Uber or Lyft ride from Miami airport to Fort Lauderdale costs around $25–$35 and takes 30–60 minutes, depending on traffic.

It’s worth noting that Fort Lauderdale isn’t particularly walkable, so you’ll likely need transportation to get around. The city recently introduced a bike-share program, allowing visitors to easily rent a bike to explore. There are numerous stations along the beachfront area, making biking a great alternative to car travel. Visitors can skip the rental car—between biking or taking an Uber or Lyft, you can experience all the city has to offer without the hassle of parking.
